2 February 2012

Rather long gap between blogs but don't be fooled - that doesn't mean nothing's been happening. Far from it! The business plan is now done, a pile of funding applications put in (including the biggest one to Highland LEADER which went in last week. A 20 page monster of a form plus a mountain of supporting paperwork. Took the biggest envelope we could find to hold it all), planning permission for the new extension granted, timber for the cladding found (after Scottish Wood accidentally drove off with the first load - whoops), trace heating installed plus a pile of other things. We're now working with Chris the architect finalising all the important details on the plans ready for the building warrant. And in between all that (plus the small matter of Christmas etc) we held our first film night at the hall last Saturday. Great evening! Good turnout, hilarious film (I, to my shame, had never seen Whiskey Galore) and superb popcorn. Raised more than £220 which we're sharing with the Whist Group who helped us with this event. From the feedback we got there's a bit of an appetite not just for more popcorn but for more films. So thanks to everyone for coming.

  3. So why have you not paid the whist group their cash as they did all the work?

      Hi

The joint fundraiser was the Film Night of "Whisky Galore" and then Whist had their own fundraiser on Thursday 12 April 2012 with the Salsa fundraiser run only by SACC on Saturday 14 April 2012.

The proceeds from the fundraiser held by the Whist on Thursday 12 April 2012 was retained in full by the Whist Group.

I did meet Mary Knowles (Whist Treasurer) to square things up ie I gave her 1/2 of what was raised on the Whisky Galore night and she gave me back what was owned in terms of hall hire for the fortnightly meetings and for the hall hire for the 12 April 2012 fundraiser. Mary later phoned me to say that they had actually underpaid us by 1 hour for their fundraiser ie £5.78, I said not to worry I would catch up with her at some point.

SACC directors and volunteers have been pretty busy over the past few months with various fund raising events but my recollection of the Salsa night was that a lot of work went into making the hall as attractive as possible with directors and volunteers giving up their own time to make bunting and I remember several of us spending most of Saturday decorating the hall, putting up bunting and lights, laying out tables and 2 directors in particular spent all day preparing lovely food for the Salsa evening. A lot of hard work went into that night and the feedback from the people who were willing to give something different a go and who turned up on the night was very very positive.

It is very easy to gripe from the sidelines especially anonymously and if not in full possession of the facts.
